Tarah Who? – “Yay or Nay”

Tarah Who? is a rock duo with serious moxie that teams up with a punk trio from Spain called Faul to release a single that is everything but normal. It combines sounds from many genres, such as punk, rock, and electronic music, and features lyrics in three different languages. The artful delivery of Spanish, English, and German vocals on the track represents the group’s stylistic diversity. This track has a lot of spunk!

“Yay or Nay” opens with a sensual Spanish intro, quickly giving way to a brutal guitar riff. The riff sounds like something from Rival Sons, Tigercub, or Audioslave and is gnarly and makes you want to headbang. Upon this, the lyrics “Yay or nay, si or no,” offer an almost hypnotic sound, giving the verse a unique sound.

An upbeat chorus breaks this trance-inducing section. Starting with “It’s a pretty simple question!...,” this chorus displays the group’s denial and attitude both sonically and in meaning. The vocal delivery then escalates to something reminiscent of Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” making clear the diversity the group is capable of.

The next verse is like the first but offers some German lyrics from Corinna Rautenberg instead of the Spanish ones from members of Faul in the first verse. It then moves back to the English part of the chorus immediately, performed by Tarah Carpenter, only to be followed up with the title phrase “Yay or Nay.” Then, an extended chorus with mixed lyrical content bridges into another full chorus like the first. Finally, the track ends with a sensual Spanish outro.

The track is worth listening to if you’re a rock or punk music fan. It’s surprisingly stylistically diverse and is a refreshing take on the genre. It offers something wildly different than anything you’d find in mainstream punk rock playlists.
