Tallie Spencer has made a name for herself as a professional journalist and writer. Since the start of her career, she has contributed content and stories to prominent media outlets such as Billboard, Insider, Good Morning America, and more.

In 2020, Spencer launched RemixdMagazine.com, a digital media company that focuses on highlighting independent music news. Since the launch of her magazine, Spencer has catapulted her career into the music industry by creating a lane of her own as a music journalist. With her journalism background, she provided a platform for independent artists to tell their stories and their music career journeys in her magazine.

Prior to the launch of her magazine, she remained a present force in the industry and made appearances covering events as a host at several award shows, concerts, and performances.

Now, as someone with a strong background and experience in the music journalism world, Spencer’s work spans from working with brands and individuals alike to market and promote various projects. She specializes in helping individuals and brands curate their image through storytelling and PR.

Spencer is strongly familiar with the act of storytelling, as she’s been able to conduct original interviews with many celebrity figures in the hip-hop and R&B world. One recent story that Spencer broke was with rapper Mulatto who officially confirmed her name change. Spencer’s familiarity and connections within the music scene resulted in her delving into the public relations realm and led her to be able to work on larger publicity campaigns for various music entities. Some of her clients range from independent music labels like Yung Bleu’s Vandross Music Group, to film production studios such as No More Heroes.

And Tallie is known for being a dynamic presence on camera. In 2020, she became the host of Canada-based media outlet Hot Freestyle, where she secured and conducted interviews with celebrity talent such as Mulatto, Ty Dolla $ign, 24k Goldn, and more.

Spencer also graduated from Loyola Marymount University with her Bachelor’s of Arts in Communication Studies, and from the University of Southern California with her Master’s of Science in Journalism. She was the first person in her family to graduate college.

We caught up with Tallie Spencer and spoke with her about what it takes to run a media organization independently and to build a brand while doing it. During our conversation, Spencer kept it real about having to make several sacrifices in order to pursue success.

What inspired you to start and want to grow your brand?

I’ve always wanted to have my own. After working for several corporate organizations over the years, it was a freeing feeling to fully be able to pursue my own ideas the way that I wanted to. I have a passion for writing and telling stories, so it seemed natural for me to create a magazine where I get to read and write about things that I love. Also, I’m a hustler — so I knew at some point that I was going to own a business, I just didn’t think it would be now. But I’m blessed to be able to say that I own a digital media company that provides opportunities for others! And I have a lot of ideas for the future that I can’t wait to see come true.

In your experience so far, what have been some of the challenges of building your own brand?

Figuring everything out from scratch. Not knowing what direction I wanted to take things in. Ultimately it just comes with a lot of late nights and early mornings trying to figure it out. My brand is like my baby, I feel like I have to nurture it and just want to see it grow — so I’m dedicating 110% of my time and energy into it. Which I’m happy to do, but it made me realize that being an entrepreneur and having your own brand is NOT easy and definitely is not for everyone.

What is next for you as you build and inspire?

My goal is to continue to provide opportunities and resources for the people I work with. Whether that’s for independent artists or even other entrepreneurs, I’m happy to help figure out ways to grow other people’s brands through storytelling and PR. I want to get to a point where people can ask me for literally anything, and I can do it for them — or at least point them in the right direction. I just want to continue to build in a way that’s meaningful and genuine, really. I would love to expand to different countries eventually and own buildings/offices for people to come to in different cities. But the way that this journey has been unpredictable so far, I try not to think too far ahead and really take things day by day. Things, especially in the media space, change really quickly!
