Degree of Difficulty Film
The independent film industry is booming with a variety of depictions and perspectives. Highlighting issues the mainstream tends to overlook, filmmakers are taking the platform into their own hands. A new film Degree of Difficulty, touches on the realities of education and why obtaining a profitable trade is important. Produced and directed by Midwest film producer Cornell Ford, this portrayal breaks the boundaries of the standard American dream.
“College Does not always Adequate Success”
Telling the story of two women college graduates with opposing backgrounds, viewers can examine the different types of struggles they face. Although this may seem like a minor situation, the truth is college does not always adequate to success. Cornell’s driving force behind this creation is to highlight the true challenges college graduates face, especially women. With most graduates coming home to student loan debt, the value of a college degree becomes questionable. In addition to student debt, Corporate America amplifies injustices like bigotry, quid pro quo and abusive authority. These issues amongst many, plague women throughout the work environment.
With a story so deep and true, Cornell’s cast brought their most authentic self to each role. The film is lead by Sophia Schumacher (Morgan), Shaquita Banks (Krystal), Samuel Martin (Percy), Devon Leroy (Jeff), Pete Berwick (Mr. Fisher) and Pete Giovagnoli (The Doctor). Filmed over a course of just two weeks, the crew dedicated 8 to 14 hours a day to completing the project.
“The True Message behind Education”
Although highlighting a serious cause, the purpose of this film is to educate and inspire. Society tells us in order to thrive we must follow the process, but the world proves us wrong every time. College isn’t for everyone, but it doesn’t mean you have less chances without it. Obtaining a skill or trade that you can master and evolve from can put you into places a degree simply can not.
As for the film, Degree of Difficulty will be distributed by Maverick Entertainment during the Spring or Summer of 2024. A possible series is also in the works, which will follow the storyline of the film. Cornell’s vision for amplifying unheard voices is admirable and a perfect example of why independent filmmakers deserve to be praised.
