Introducing music lovers to a variety of appealing sounds, more artist are daring to be bold and different. With the constant increase of new talent emerging, fans may find it difficult to truly experience all that indie music artist have to offer. However, a new tradition in Chicagoland gives upcoming and buzzing talent a real chance to shine. For The Culture 4 music Showcase kicked off 2024 with a bang! Brought to fans by 23 ENT & Determined Radio, this moment was a perfect reintroduction to the power of independent music.

Held at Chicago’s famous Wild Hare, the show was hosted by i.D. The G, with sounds by Dj Mile High. The night was filled with exhilarating vibes as some of the hottest rappers graced the stage. Performances from Rufus Sims, Cali Hendrix, Panamera P, Rae Bandzz, Sinatris, HiMoney Ransum, IAmGawd, Frida Ka$hFlow, UNCHIE and Ink Dawg kept the energy high. In addition to the variety of artist, the different voices and vibes is what made this moment a memorable one. Further adding to the creative atmosphere, smooth, unique and clever hip-hop sounds help set a tone. As the show progressed, different artist showcased their raw and captivating talent. Aside from this huge performance opportunity, this event is a chance for fellow creatives to network and connect.

Alongside the outstanding line up, vendors from all walks of entrepreneurship added another element of artistry. The independent film industry is booming with a variety of depictions and perspectives. Highlighting issues the mainstream tends to overlook, filmmakers are taking the platform into their own hands. A new film Degree of Difficulty, touches on the realities of education and why obtaining a profitable trade is important. Produced and directed by Midwest film producer Cornell Ford, this portrayal breaks the boundaries of the standard American dream.

“College Does not always Adequate Success”

Telling the story of two women college graduates with opposing backgrounds, viewers can examine the different types of struggles they face. Although this may seem like a minor situation, the truth is college does not always adequate to success. Cornell’s driving force behind this creation is to highlight the true challenges college graduates face, especially women. With most graduates coming home to student loan debt, the value of a college degree becomes questionable. In addition to student debt, Corporate America amplifies injustices like bigotry, quid pro quo and abusive authority. These issues amongst many,  plague women throughout the work environment.

With a story so deep and true, Cornell’s cast brought their most authentic self to each role. The film is lead by Sophia Schumacher (Morgan), Shaquita Banks (Krystal), Samuel Martin (Percy), Devon Leroy (Jeff), Pete Berwick (Mr. Fisher) and Pete Giovagnoli (The Doctor). Filmed over a course of just two weeks, the crew dedicated 8 to 14 hours a day to completing the project.

“The True Message behind Education”

Although highlighting a serious cause, the purpose of this film is to educate and inspire. Society tells us in order to thrive we must follow the process, but the world proves us wrong every time. College isn’t for everyone, but it doesn’t mean you have less chances without it. Obtaining a skill or trade that you can master and evolve from can put you into places a degree simply can not.

As for the film, Degree of Difficulty will be distributed by Maverick Entertainment during the Spring or Summer of 2024. A possible series is also in the works, which will follow the storyline of the film. Cornell’s vision for amplifying unheard voices is admirable and a perfect example of why independent filmmakers deserve to be praised. Apart of the dynamic collective VHS CLUB, he released the beautiful album Feelings Deep 4 in early October of 2023. There is a crisis amongst our youth, a crisis that effects black and brown youth everywhere. The culprit known as pipeline, is not only stopping youth from succeeding, it’s altering their livelihood. This term is used to identify the school to prison journey that seems impossible to eradicate. Although the fight to end this issue continues, one depiction aims to inform, educate and provoke emotion surrounding the issue. Pipeline, a play by the same name of the issue sheds a spotlight on the topic in a profound way.

Written by Dominique Morisseau, the play premiered on Off-Broadway in 2017. Detailing the story of a black family struggling to overcome and achieve, the compelling depiction speaks volumes. Directed by Adrianna Jones a visionary in the world of music theater and April Harris a voice for black art throughout Racine, the power of black creators shines effortlessly throughout. Another element that makes this play so powerful is its compelling cast. The line up includes Kelsey Harris, Justin Muhammad, Isaiah Lambert, Corey Prince, Aryanna Crenshaw, and Gina Cesarz. Each of them bring a unique, fresh and memorable perspective.

Pipeline Premier’s September 15th

This incredible story of tragedy, reflection, injustice and black culture is a moment for all ages to witness. Taking it a step further, this depiction sheds light on the issues surrounding the school to prison pipeline, and possible solutions. Pipeline is coming to the stage September 15th, 2023 at Park High School located at 1901 12th st. in Racine, Wisconsin. The show starts at 6PM with a tickets priced at $20. In addition to keeping the culture thriving, the need for community traditions is still in high demand. Author Willie Mitchell and event curator Felicia Ford partner to give the community the best of both. The Pop-Up African Experience Poetry Slam & Loaded BookBag Giveaway is an event combining cultural exposure and community empowerment.

Created by Willie Mitchell Jr. and Felicia Ford, this pop up event gives the community a chance to bond with each other. Willie who is an author, motivational speaker, nursing student and father has always found freedom through language. Since high school, Willie used language and poetry as an escape from the world. Dealing with depression, anxiety and personal trauma’s, finding solitude through spoken word saved his life. A talented author of two books titled Uncontained Vol 1 and 2, his poetry is both in depth and emotional. Through poetry he founded his business Eagle Vision Motivation and Vision Poetry.

The co-host and creator of this event Felicia Ford, is a woman using the intuition that God gave her. Initially motivated by the lack of options for local entertainment, Felicia began putting together her own events. Testing out different themes, amenities and attractions, lead her to become an event curator naturally. Further driven behind the passing of her son D’Anthony Purvis, Felicia strives to provide unique experiences for the community. Offering a variety of events that range from adult only, kid friendly and family events, she’s always providing a space for every and anyone.

Giving Back to the Culture & Community

The African Experience Poetry Slam and Loaded Bookbag Giveaway, has a lineup like no other. This Pop-Up has everything from, African Dancers sharing their culture’s moves to traditional African food by Bruce Wright and BBQ from Kobies Pizzeria. In addition to food and dance, there is an incredible line up of poets, authors and speakers looking to give back and spread love throughout the community. Save the date and come out on August 20th, 2023 to Foss Park in North Chicago IL. From 2-6pm join the community for a moment of culture and unity.

The black art experience is expanding every single day, as new perspectives are shared with the world. Offering a powerful lens, stories of trauma, love, strength and opportunity are told through a new-age vision. Two black male artist amplify art in incredible depth with the Shadow Work Exhibit. Lonnie Edwards and Tobi Shinobi share a viewpoint exploring mental health while combining the use of interplay, light and shadow within the human mind.

Shadow Work Elevates Mental health

To start off, this exhibit is so much more than art on a wall. From the moment you enter the exhibit, a feeling of inspiration and reflection take over. Within the first few minutes you are bombarded by “A Seat At The Table,” a beautiful yet insightful piece created by both Lonnie Edwards and Tobi Shinobi. Representing the gesture of creating your own lane, this opening piece set the tone for the remainder of the exhibit.In another portion of the exhibit, onlookers can experience Lonnie Edwards shadow work series, which captures the fluidity of self-love and the search for balance. The Chicago, New York and Germany based artist exudes artistic passion.

Embodying  emotion, experience and imagination, Lonnie’s art depicts his personal triumph. Using a mix of acrylic and mixed media, his art is both mesmerizing and informal. Painting a vivid picture depicting a journey through blackness, mental stability and overcoming, his impact is incredible.

Further adding to the allure of the Shadow Work Exhibit, Tobi Shinobi is the perfect counterpart to this revolutionary exhibit. The award-winning creative is based between London and Chicago, giving global and local influence. His captivating “shinfrared” series explores the unforseen through infrared light. Gifted with the eye for beauty through photography, Tobi uses a combination of stills, motion and creative strategy to pull in audiences. His work explores another angle of admiration while triggering a deeper internal reflection.

The Shadow Work Exhibit is not only visual appealing, it’s soulfully revitalizing. Without any hesitation or resistance, this exhibit amplifies blackness, love, simplistic beauty and the overall impact of the human psyche. This Exhibit is located at 1819, W Chicago Ave at the West Town Chamber of Commerce in Chicago. Shadow Work, is available to experience until September 30th.

The classic saying it takes a village to raise a child still holds true in today’s world. As violence, limited resources and lack of involvement increases, neighborhoods are experiencing a different type of drought. In an effort to eliminate separation and promote inclusion, two black businesses partner together to promote unity throughout the community.

Carlos Smith owner of A Crazy Place Venue and Michael Coleman owner of Eleven19 Kitchen and Cocktails restaurant and bar, put together one of the biggest community weekends of the summer. The “Crazy Summer Takeover” is a three-day celebration taking place Friday June 23rd, Saturday June 24th and Sunday June 25th. Over the course of a weekend, the community can enjoy food, outside sports, vibrant sounds and a safe environment.

The event kicks off Friday with “CancerSZN” themed party at A Crazy Place Venue in downtown Waukegan. DJ Pharris of Power92, will be in the building setting the vibes for the crowd the entire night.The following day a phenomenal softball game will take place at Foss Park, in North Chicago. In addition to the softball game, residents can pull up and park while enjoying the sounds of DJ Gold.  And lastly the final event takes place at Eleven19 Kitchen and Cocktails in North Chicago, with a delicious “Trap&Brunch” special.

Although these establishments offer events regularly, this is the first time they have joined together for something this impactful. Both Carlos and Michael feel that every community should offer a variety of fun and safe environments. In addition to creating fun outlets, both businesses are redefining what unity within the community actually looks like. This gesture is both inspirational and influential. If you are in the Lake County area this weekend save the date, this is an epic moment to remember!
