Poet Spotlight: Meet Jay Chattelle

Jay Chattelle, a native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, is a multi-talented artist whose journey has been marked by resilience, creativity, and a deep connection to his faith. Born and raised in the city, Jay discovered his profound love for poetry early on, realizing that expressing his emotions on paper came naturally to him. His poetic prowess has earned him numerous accolades, including several poetry contest victories.

In the world of spoken word poetry, Jay draws inspiration from poets such as Maximus Parthas, Christopher Johnson, and the iconic DMX, whose raw and heartfelt spoken word resonated deeply with him. DMX, in particular, left an indelible mark as the first spoken-word artist that Jay truly admired. Another influential figure in Jay’s journey as a spoken word artist is Jarred Paul. Jay’s passion for poetry led him to obtain the “Poet Laureate of Pawtucket” position for several consecutive years and also won the prestigious title of “Poet of the Year”. Jay Chattelle’s artistic talents extend beyond poetry into the realm of music, where he has innovatively created a genre known as “floetry” fusing spoken word with music. This inventive fusion showcases his versatility as an artist.

Jay’s musical influences include the legendary Michael Jackson, especially songs like “Man in the Mirror,” which carry powerful messages of self-reflection and change. Similarly, DMX’s music played a pivotal role in Jay’s life, teaching him valuable life lessons and providing an outlet for him to express his emotions.

Despite facing personal challenges and setbacks, including a speech impediment, Jay Chattelle’s determination and faith have propelled him forward. He believes that God has always been a guiding force in his life, even during the most challenging moments. Jay vividly recalls a life-altering motorcycle accident on September 24th 2005, a day when he heard a comforting message that everything would be alright as he lay in excruciating pain on the ground. Doctors doubted he would walk again, but Jay defied the odds and not only regained his mobility but also continued pursuing his passions in spoken word, acting, and writing.

Jay’s involvement in the local film industry is a testament to his commitment to his dreams. He has acted in two local movies, with his most recent role as the Major of the Providence police force in “Innocence Lost.” This journey from high school acting to fulfilling his dreams of being on television and in movies showcases his unwavering dedication.

From a troubled past marked by encounters with the criminal justice system to a life dedicated to positive change, Jay Chattelle serves as an inspiration to all who know his story. His message is clear: “When you come from nothing and have nothing, never give up, never quit.” Jay Chattelle’s life story exemplifies the transformative power of faith, resilience, and creativity.
