It is perhaps unfortunate that a lot of the music that comes out of the broad family of genres that fall under the broad umbrella of urban music is regarded as shallow. Rappers talking about their own, all too human, ambitions, hip-hop artists waging war with each other, soul boys just trying to pick up their latest conquest. It all seems built on the lowest common denominator.
But then artists like Mayne come along and (thankfully) shatter those illusions. If It Comes is a fantastic blend of higher awareness, spirituality as it applies to everyday life, and an awakened street philosophy that draws the listener into the subject matter at hand.
While his fellow rappers are struggling with a life of crime and grime, put into rhyme, Mayne wrestles with much deeper concerns – the very nature of the human condition. Some are happy to worry about and consider only their own life and their personal story. Mayne would instead unravel the threads that reveal what it is to be human in the first place. Doesn’t that sound like a much more worthy use of time?
