The sole child of Andrée (née Roggero) and flutist Joseph Rampal, Jean-Pierre Rampal was born in Marseille and is regarded as the first exponent of the solo flute in modern times. He established the instrument on the international concert circuit and attracted large audiences and critical acclaim on par with that of famous singers, pianists, and violinists. With his outstanding skills and work, Rampal set the path for the subsequent generation of flutist superstars, including James Galway and Emmanuel Pahud. He has been personally “credited with returning to the flute the popularity as a solo classical instrument which it had not held since the 18th century.”Thus, Rampal, after becoming the first solo flute, has contributed a lot to the rise of flutes.
